Highway 3 Cleanup: Hidden Litter & Mechanical Setbacks

September 3rd Cleanup Effort

Yesterday, we continued our cleanup along Highway 3, starting near Grantley Adams School and working towards Market Hill.

We successfully collected nine bags of litter, including one bag entirely of recycling. In addition to the smaller debris, the team also hauled away a large cardboard refrigerator box and an extra-large nylon construction-waste bag.

Mechanical Difficulties

Unfortunately, our Madvac suction unit was out of service due to mechanical issues, which slowed our cleanup pace somewhat. We had to rely strictly on manual collection for this stretch.

Even with the equipment issues, the biggest challenge was once again the sheer amount of litter hidden in the grass along the roadside. What may look reasonably clean at first glance can tell a very different story once we start working through the brush. Because of the sheer volume of hidden litter we encountered, we did not get nearly as far along this stretch of highway as we had originally hoped.

We'll be back next week to continue the cleanup effort right where we left off. Keeping Barbados clean takes persistence — and there is still plenty of work to be done.
